The journey takes you along the coastal road heading to Cape Reinga. Passing through rural coastal towns, beautiful beaches and quirky shop fronts.
We drive along 90 mile beach for approximately 15 kilometres (10 miles), entering at Waipapakauri and leaving at Hukatere or vice versa depending on the tides/weather. This journey gives clients the opportunity to walk the beach and experience the sheer expanse of this well-known tourist destination.
There is an opportunity to see the wild horses (not guaranteed) in the Hukatere Forest, set free by the European settles in the late eighteen hundreds.
On to the famous Cape Reinga, where the two oceans collide. Walk the path to the lighthouse on the edge of NZ –hear the crashing of the two oceans, the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean in a spectacular swirl of currents, take time to absorb the atmosphere of this place you can almost feel the power.
Cape Reinga offers the ultimate northern New Zealand experience. This is a uniquely spiritual place where according to Maori culture/history the spirits begin their final journey to their ancestral land Hawaiki.
On leaving Cape Reinga we take a short drive south to the immense sand dunes of Te Paki Stream. You can climb to the top, the views are spellbinding, and if you are brave enough grab a sandboard and surf the dunes (not included in price).
This is also where we stop for lunch (included in the price), vegetarian/vegan/gluten free options are available.
Continuing our journey south, we will stop in Houhora for an ice cream or a pie. The huge range of pies (Paua, Seafood, Steak & Oyster to name but three) are reputedly some of the best in the Far North!
In the afternoon we work our way back to Paihia via Mangonui, where you can walk the promenade and time permitting grab a beer in the historic Mangonui Tavern.
